Mississippi Commercial Contractor License

Agency:Mississippi State Board of Contractors
Financial Requirements:

Applicants for a major classifications must give proof of a net worth of at least $50,000. For minor classifications the net worth requirement is $20,000.

Insurance Requirements:

$300,000 in liability coverage per occurance and $600,000 aggregate.

Notes:

  • A reviewed or audited financial statement including the last 12 months of financials must be submitted with the application.
  • Applicants must also have an active Department of Revenue sales tax or use tax account before applying.

 If your license has expired the fee is $450. If your license has been expired for more than 180 days, you must submit a new application.

Notes:

Licensees must provide proof of meeting net worth requirements with their renewal application. For a major classifications the requirement is at least $50,000, and for minor classifications the requirement is at least $20,000.

Required Attachments:
  • General Liability Insurance certificate of coverage *The name listed as insured on the certificate of coverage must match the name listed on your license and MSBOC must be listed on the certificate, as certificate holder to be notified in the event of cancellation of coverage or it will be returned.
  • Proof of Good Standing with Mississippi Secretary of State (Proof may be printed from website: www.sos.ms.gov) *This requirement does not apply to individuals/sole proprietors
  • Workers Compensation Insurance certificate of coverage (if required by law)
  • Balance Sheet reflecting $50,000 net worth for a major classification or $20,000 net worth for a specialty classification (Must see assets minus liabilities equals net worth).

Applications are reviewed by the Contractor Review Board on the third Wednesday of every month. To have an application reviewed at the next board meeting it must be submitted by the third Monday of that month.

As long as the state license and all insurance documents are kept up to date, the license will continue in perpetuity. If any of these documents expire and are not updated with the City, a new application will have to be submitted and reviewed by the Board.

Mississippi Lead Inspector License

An Inspector shall have successfully completed an accredited training course for inspectors and shall have: A high school diploma or its equivalent; and pass the EPA approved inspector certification exam offered by the Commission.

Before you Apply:
  • An applicant for initial certification shall have successfully completed an accredited initial training course for the specific category within the 36 months immediately preceding application or, if initial training was completed more than 36 months prior to application, the applicant shall have successfully completed an accredited refresher training course for the specific category at least every 36 months from the date of completion of initial training to the date of application.
  • An Inspector shall have successfully completed an accredited training course for inspectors and shall have: A high school diploma or its equivalent; and pass the EPA approved inspector certification exam offered by the Commission.

  • For work experience, the Department shall recognize a resume or letter of reference from a current or previous employer as evidence of meeting the work experience requirements. Work history should indicate inclusive dates of experience, employer’s name, address and phone number, positions held, projects completed, and job responsibilities held during the projects.
  • Confirmation of training shall be in the form of an original certificate of completion of the accredited training course bearing the training provider’s official seal, or an original letter from the training provider confirming completion of the course on the training provider’s letterhead, or an original letter from the training provider listing names of persons who have successfully completed the training course, with the applicant’s name included.
  • If requesting initial certification in Mississippi after completion of refresher course(s), original verification of successful
    completion of the initial training course as well as all refresher courses is required.
  • When a high school diploma, Associate’s Degree, or Bachelor’s Degree is required, attach a copy of the diploma or other written documentation from the educational institution.
  • When registration as a professional engineer or licensed architect is required, attach a copy of the registration certificate.
  • When experience is required, attach work history documenting lead-based paint activities experience; this documentation should indicate inclusive dates of experience, projects completed, your specific responsibilities on those projects, and the name(s) of the certified individual(s) under whose supervision you worked.
  • To request initial certification, enclose a photocopy of a valid picture ID such as a driver's license, state identification card, etc.
  • Enclose one (1) photograph of the applicant to be used for the Mississippi Certification Photo Identification card. Photographs shall be in color and 1 inch by 1 inch in size with the applicant’s name printed on the back. Applications submitted without photographs will be returned as incomplete.
