Every contractor granted a license is required to maintain a certificate of insurance showing the following information:
General Liability Insurance - minimum limits of $1,000,000 per occurrence and a $2,000,000 aggregate limit
Workers’ Compensation Insurance as required by Colorado Revised Statutes for any employee other than the licensee
Certificate of Insurance must be submitted with the following information:

Boulder does not accept reciprocal licenses from other jurisdictions. ICC certifications, State of Colorado Electrical or Plumbing certification, or ISA Arborist certification must be submitted with your contractor license application for your license to be issued.
This license entitles the Licensee to contract for the building, construction, alteration, addition, remodel, demolition and wrecking of buildings, structures and portions thereof of all types of construction in any and all occupancy group classifications.

A $1,000,000 certificate of Commercial General Liability insurance is required from an insurance company with a minimum of a “B++” rating. The City of Fort Collins must be listed as both a Certificate Holder and an Additional Insured.
Bond Requirements:
A $20,000 license & permit bond is required to obtain a Right-of-Way Contractor’s License, with an additional and separate $10,000 license and permit bond for each endorsement. The bonding company must have a minimum rating of “A-“and the bond must be original and signed.
There is no formal renewal process. A contractor’s license will be kept current as long as the bonds and insurance are kept up to date and the Engineering Department receives original continuation certificates each year.

Every contractor granted a license under the provisions of this Code shall be required to maintain general liability insurance of a minimum of not less than $1,000,000.00 combined single limit (CSL), $1,000,000.00 general aggregate and $1,000,000.00 products completed aggregate for Class D contractor licenses, and $1,000,000.00 CSL, $2,000,000.00 general aggregate, and $2,000,000.00 products completed aggregate for all other licenses. To complete the renewal process please follow the following steps:
If you have already taken our 2019 Code Renewal Exam you will not need to do this again this year. It is available for those contractors still needing to complete it this year to renew. If Applicable please complete the 2019 Building Code Renewal Exam and download the certificate provided after achieving a score of 70%. (Class D and E licenses do not need to take an exam)
In accordance with Ordinance 16.48.060, all qualified individuals for the Class A, B, C, and Mechanical licenses need to complete the renewal exam prior to license renewal. These renewal exams are only required at each new code rotation cycle, generally every three years. Upon receipt of the application and completion of the renewal exam (if/when applicable), we will review the status of the contractor's insurance certificates and any fees required before approving.

This license shall entitle the holder to contract for the construction, alteration and repair of any type occupancy classification allowed by the Regional Building Code, with the exception of Groups A, E, and I occupancies exceeding thirty-thousand (30,000) square feet in total building floor area or any building that requires Type I construction.
This license shall entitle the holder to contract for the construction, alteration and repair of any type of occupancy classification allowed by the Regional Building Code, with the exception of Group A, E, I or H occupancies or any building that requires Type I construction.
This license shall entitle the holder to contract for nonstructural remodeling in all occupancies, with the exception of Group A, E, I or H occupancies or any building that requires Type I construction. Further, this license shall entitle the holder to contract for any work authorized under a Building Contractor C license, the construction, alteration and repair of any Group B, F, M or S occupancies not more than one (1) story in height and not more than seven-thousand five-hundred (7,500) square feet in total building floor area, and the construction, alteration or repair of any Group R occupancies not more than sixteen (16) units and not more than two (2) stories in height.
This license shall entitle the holder to contract for the construction, alteration and repair of one- and two-family dwellings not more than three (3) stories in height and their accessory structures. Further, this license shall entitle the holder to construct, alter and repair Group R-2 occupancies of not more than eight (8) units and not more than two (2) stories in height. When in the opinion of the Building Official the work to be performed is minor and does not affect the structure or safety of the building, the holder of this license may also contract for nonstructural repair and remodeling of all buildings with the exception of Groups A, E, I, and H occupancies, or buildings that require Type I construction.
This license shall entitle the holder to contract for work only in the single trade designated on the license. This license shall be issued by the Board of Review to those engaged in contracting as other than a Building Contractor A, B, or C as licensed in the Regional Building Code for labor or for labor and materials involving only a single trade, to include but not be limited to: foundation repair, masonry, retaining walls, roofing, siding, stucco, glazing, and swimming pools; and also those specifically designated in the Regional Building Code.
This license shall entitle the holder to contract for the erection, enlargement, moving and maintenance, or removal of all signs governed under the Regional Building Code.
This license shall entitle the holder to perform all work of a Sign Contractor D-5A except for freestanding signs over 20 feet high and electric signs. A Sign Contractor D-6B may repaint or maintain any signs.

This license shall authorize the contractor to obtain permits for and perform the installation, replacement or service, and repair of duct work serving heating, ventilating, and air conditioning systems in existing one- and two-family dwellings and accessory structures of not more than three (3) stories in height.
This license shall entitle the holder to obtain permits for and perform the construction, alteration, or repair of any device or equipment governed by the Regional Building Code.

Contractors are responsible to email an updated insurance policy annually or prior to the expiration date on your certificate in order to remain an active contractor

Work Classification: Contractors performing work as the Permit Applicant on residential buildings/structures permitted under the International Residential Building Code must provide a copy of a Certificate listed above.
Light Commercial Contractors: Provide a copy of either the Light Commercial Contractor BEST TEST Card or a copy of the ICC Contractors Certificate for the F12 or G12 National Standard Building Contractor (B) Exam.
Work Classification: Contractors performing work as the Permit Applicant on commercial buildings/structures under the International Building Code must provide a copy of a Certificate listed above. Light Commercial Contractor Certification will allow you to perform work on all commercial buildings, which are Construction Type III, IV, and V buildings. Light Commercial Contractors are allowed to perform alteration/repair work only on Construction Type I and II buildings. Light Commercial Contractor Certification also allows you to perform all work under the International Residential Building Code.
Unlimited Commercial Contractors: Provide a copy of either the Unlimited Commercial Contractor BEST TEST Card or a copy of the ICC Contractor Certificate for the F11 or G11 National Standard General Building Contractor (A) Exam.
Work Classification: This Certification allows you to perform work as a Permit Applicant on any Building or Structure in the International Building Code and International Residential Building Code.
NOTE: The Project Manager who will be on-site managing the work on all new construction or additions on buildings that are Type I or II Construction shall hold the required Certificate in their name.
Roofing Contractors: Provide a copy of either the Roofing Contractor BEST TEST Card or a copy of the ICC Contractors Certificate for the F14 or G14 National Standard Roofing Contractor Exam.
Work Classification: This certification allows you to perform roofing work on all buildings and structures with no limitations.
Mechanical Contractors: Provide a copy of either the Mechanical Contractors BEST TEST Card or a copy of the ICC Contractors Certificate for the F29 or G29 National Standard Master Mechanical Exam.
Work Classification: This certification allows you to perform HVAC and Fuel Gas work on all buildings and structures with no limitations.
Plumbing Contractors: Plumbers will need to provide a copy of their Colorado Master and Contractor Plumbing License
Electrical Contractors: Electricians will need to provide a copy of their Colorado Master and Contractor Electrical License
Manufactured Home Installers: Installers of manufactured homes will need to provide a copy of their installer’s registration from the Colorado Division of Housing.
Colorado State Licensed Architects/Engineers: Professionals may be a Permit Applicant and take full responsibility for project management of any Residential or Commercial Building Project and are Exempt from taking any exams and obtaining contractor certifications above. All Engineers or Architects must then carry the Required General Liability Insurance Coverage, or list a Contractor of Record on the Permit Application who then must provide a copy of the General Liability Insurance Coverage and proof of Contractor Certification requirements as well.
