British Columbia Engineer-in-Training Registration

British Columbia Permit to Practice

  • Engineers and Geoscientists BC protects the public by requiring firms that wish to use restricted or trademarked words in their business names to obtain consent from Engineers and Geoscientists BC prior to registration/incorporation. Engineers and Geoscientists BC will generally grant consent only to firms that are Registrants of Engineers and Geoscientists BC, or that undertake to become registered and to obtain a Permit to Practice from Engineers and Geoscientists BC.
  • All businesses that wish to register a name containing a restricted word must complete an online Business Name Consent Request. If a firm seeks to incorporate or otherwise register a new business name with the Registrar of Companies (including registering a proprietorship or partnership), the Registrar of Companies may grant a conditional approval, subject to receipt of Engineers and Geoscientists BC's consent to use of the restricted or trademarked word.

Qualifying Individual Requirements:

Firms must identify at least one Responsible Registrant who will acknowledge responsibility for the firm and complete the application on the firm’s behalf. The Responsible Registrant must be an engineering or geoscience professional who will be responsible for ensuring that the firm’s practice meets ethical, quality management, and continuing education requirements. They will also serve as a point of contact for practice reviews, audits, and investigations. Firms can identify more than one Responsible Registrant if needed (e.g., a large firm with multiple lines of business might designate a different Responsible Registrant for each area of practice).

Notes:

Registrant firms are required to have a Professional Practice Management Plan (PPMP) in place documenting policies and procedures that indicate how they meet the ethics, quality management, and continuing education requirements. A registrant firm’s PPMP must be in place within 12 months of registering for a Permit to Practice. At minimum, the PPMP must contain:

  • a code of conduct that identifies how the registrant firm will ensure compliance with Engineers and Geoscientists BC’s Code of Ethics; 
  • policies and procedures meeting the quality management requirements in the bylaws; 
  • policies and procedures to ensure compliance with the continuing education requirements; 
  • the organizational structure of the registrant firm; 
  • the names of the registrant firm’s Responsible Officer and Responsible Registrant(s); 
  • the registrant firm’s area(s) of practice;  
  • the Responsible Registrant(s) designated to each area of practice at the registrant firm; and 
  • a policy regarding the use of the Permit to Practice Number by individuals employed by or under contract with the registrant firm.
