Licenses

We track the following licenses with the Wisconsin Department of Transportation - Dealers and Agents Section in order to provide compliance services to our clients. As a client, you see this and other Compliance Core™ data in License Manager in-line with your licenses.

Wisconsin Motor Vehicle Salesperson License

Initial Registration

Form:

Salesperson/Representative License Application MV 2184

Instructions:
  1. Fill out and complete the application
  2. Take the completed form and fee(s) to a DMV customer service center to take the required exam
Filing Method:

In-person at DMV customer service center

Agency Fee:
  • $9 or $13 depending on the associated dealers current license expiration date
  • $5 exam fee
Notes:

Employing Wisconsin-licensed dealer must fill out and sign the bottom portion of the application. 

Renewal Not Required

Not required



Salesperson license renewals are completed by the employing dealer. Both the salesperson and their employing dealer's license will expire on the same day. 

Wisconsin Retail Motor Vehicle Dealer License

Initial Registration

Form:

Motor Vehicle Dealer Two Year License Application MV2186

Instructions:

You must print and mail 2 copies of the license application form MV2186

Filing Method:

Mail

Agency Fee:

Fees due to the Registration Fee Trust: 

  • $40 license fee
  • $40 branch license fee, if applicable
  • $2 sublot license fee, if applicable
  • $8 salesperson license fee (if not licensed in the last 5 years an exam is required and this fee will be paid at the time of the exam in addition to a $5 exam fee)
  • $150 dealer plate fee for the first two dealer plates (required)
  • $10 for each additional dealer plate

 

Fees due to the Wisconsin Department of Financial Institutions (select only ONE):

  • $20 if dealer plans to operate on a cash-only basis for the next two years of operations
  • $100 if the dealership originates retail installment contracts and/or consumer licenses and all contracts or leases originated were sold/transferred to another party OR some or all of the contracts were retained by our dealership
  • $100 if the total amount of installment contracts and/or consumer leases originated and retained in the last 12 months was less than $100,000
  • A bill will be sent if the total amount of installment contracts and/or consumer leases originated and retained in the last 12 months was greater than $100,000

  • Business Registration Documents filed with the WI Department of Financial Institutions or governing body of state where corporation was established
  • Zoning/Local Permit
  • Wisconsin Sales Tax Seller Permit

Registration Renewal

Form:

Forms will be mailed to the dealership by the Dealer and Agents Section and the Department of Financial Institutions approximately 2 months prior to the expiration of your license. All dealer plates, salesperson licenses, etc. will expire on the same day.

If you do not wish to renew a salesperson listed on the renewal form simply cross out the name and do not send a renewal fee.
