Maine Motor Vehicle Dealer License

Bond Requirements:

Surety Bond in an amount determined by the number of sales per year:

  • 0-50: $25,000
  • 51-100: $50,000
  • 101-150: $75,000
  • 150+: $100,000
Registered Agent (Special Agency) Required?No
Qualifying Individual Requirements:

Every dealer must employ at least one mechanic with thorough knowledge of the vehicles being sold. An owner can be the mechanic.

Notes:

Once your inspection is complete, you must contact your insurance agent and have them submit a R-1348 insurance filing to the Dealer Licensing Office for insurance on your dealer plates. If you do not require dealer plates, this filing is not required.

  • Applicant Questionnaire (notarized)
  • Certificate of Franchise (new dealers)
  • Partnership Agreement (General Partnerships must be registered at the city/town level where the business is located)
  • Organization Documents filed with the Secretary of State (Domestic Corporations/LLCs/LLPs/LPs)
  • Application for Authority to do business in Maine (Foreign Corporations/LLCs/LLPs/LPs)
  • Application for Assumed Name Registration, if applicable
  • Meeting minutes OR sworn notarized affidavit that includes the names, titles, and percentages of ownership in the business
  • Sales Tax Certificate
  • Background Check Documentation for each applicable individual
  • Signed Affidavit of Completion of Dealer Training Information

Registration Renewal

Agency Fee:

Annually by the last day of the month of initial licensure.
